::What
is Scouting?:: Scouting started in 1907 when Sir Robert Baden-Powell started the movement. He tested his idea's out on camp that year and succeeded. So since then the movement has grown and grown to being what it is now. When Sir Baden-Powell started the movement the only people taking part were boys aged between 11 and 18 but now boys and girls between six and adult-hood can take part. In Beavers (started recently) you must be six to join and when you are 8 and a half you can leave to go to Cubs (started by Baden-Powell in 1914), then when you are 12 and a half you leave Cubs to join the Scouts, before joining the Venture scouts (called senior scouts when B.P. founded them in 1917.) at 15 and a half. Baden-Powell went on to write his world famous book, SCOUTING FOR BOYS. The book had cartoons, activities, pioneering tips and much-much more. It was serialized every fortnight for many year, and now it is has been published many times. In Scouts we do a lot of outdoor activities. In the summer we go to summer camp. We prepare for this during the year as well as play games, enter competitions in the district, badge work, skills and loads more!! But we also go on hikes and do other activities in the winter such as night hikes and wide games. We do map reading, cooking, first aid and other skills all through the year. We do trips and expeditions in rock climbing etc. to gain experience in these activities and get to know the equipment. We also do community activities, for the people. Baden Powell said, Do at least one good turn every day. Our latest "turn" is cleaning up the lane that we use to gain access to the hall. It's not just dib dib dib in Scouts, we don't just tie ropes, saw wood, camp and make fires. We have badges to earn like electronics, amateur radio, car mechanics and other pursuits with a technological content in addition to the traditional outdoor activities. All over the world since B.P. founded the movement we do badge work schemes. We complete a task, get our sheets signed then move on to the next task in that particular badge. The badges get harder, The Scout Award firs, then The Pathfinder, the Explore before moving to t the really hard ones. There are 140,129 Scouts in the UK according to the 1996 census. |
